Western Couple Photoshoot: Cutting Horse Competitors in September Glory

As a photographer based out of Sacramento, California, I'm lucky to work with couples who not only have a deep love for each other but also share a passion for the equine lifestyle. This September, I had the incredible privilege of capturing a stunning Western couple photoshoot featuring a couple who both ride and compete in cutting horses—two of the most skilled and graceful creatures on earth.

The Couple: A Love for Each Other & Their Horses

Meet David and Torie, a true powerhouse couple in the world of cutting horses. Both competitive riders (David a pro trainer), they’ve spent years perfecting their skills in the sport, which is as much about the relationship between rider and horse as it is about precision and speed. Whether in the show pen or on the ranch, they’re a team—each perfectly attuned to the other, and their horses are just as much a part of their story.

From the first moment we connected, I knew their session would be special. They were looking for a photographer who understood their passion for the Western lifestyle and the unique connection they share with their horses. As an equine and Western wedding photographer, capturing that bond is always one of my favorite things to do, and I was excited to get started.

The Location: A Perfect Backdrop for a Western Couple Photo Shoot

We shot the session on a beautiful ranch outside of Sacramento, in Rancho Murieta, where the land stretches wide and the late summer sun paints everything in golden hues. It was the ideal setting for a Western-themed photoshoot—wide open spaces, rustic barns, and that perfect California sky. With the backdrop of towering oak trees and the soft glow of a September sunset, it was easy to see why David and Torie’s horses thrive in such a serene environment.

The Shoot: Capturing the Western Spirit

From the moment the shoot began, I could tell Torie and David were in their element. There’s something incredible about a couple who shares not only a love for each other but also a deep respect and understanding of the horses they ride.

As we began the shoot in the open field, David and Torie effortlessly rode side by side, the golden light casting long shadows as they moved through the wide expanse. The field stretched out before them, creating a perfect backdrop for their connection—both with each other and with their horses. Megan, riding with quiet confidence, embodied the essence of calm elegance, while David’s relaxed but energetic presence brought a beautiful dynamic to the scene. The natural rhythm between them unfolded as we captured intimate moments of shared smiles and laughter, blending perfectly with the expansive, serene landscape around them.

What I loved most about this session was the authenticity. They weren’t posing or trying to be something they’re not; it was just them, doing what they love. It’s a photographer's dream to capture such raw emotion and genuine moments, and that’s exactly what we got here. As they rode through the fields, we caught the light just right—their horses kicking up dust, the glow of the setting sun hitting the golden grass, and the way they both smiled at each other while riding side by side.

We also took some moments to get some intimate, candid shots on horseback. Torie & David would share a quiet moment, a whisper to each other or a gentle touch to their horses, and I’d snap away, preserving that fleeting tenderness. These moments are what make equine photography so magical—the connection between a couple, their animals, and the land they love.

The Gear and the Details

As much as I love capturing action shots, there’s also a lot of beauty in the details. Torie’s outstanding outfit choices, David’s freshly pressed shirt, and their matching western spirit all contributed to the rustic yet polished feel of the shoot. And let's not forget the tack—each piece of leather was carefully selected to match the couple's personal style, with some added touches of vintage flair. These details made for some gorgeous close-ups and were just as important as the action shots in telling the full story of the day.

Traveling the West for Your Western Wedding Photoshoot
